For a backwards, butt-end of civilization example of a town, this place really isn't too bad. I can get a good enough cellular signal on the PDA to network out, so waiting for Dani to finish all her legal stuff here isn't the torture it seemed at first.

Next semester's schedule looks... wait. This is not the schedule I saw before I left. Mr. Summers? Why am I taking Phys. Ed? I didn't sign up for Phys. Ed. And why is there no teacher listed? Is this a joke?

And it appears I've been transferred up into Mr. Dayspring's history class. AND humanities? AND English composition? AND Music 201? Not a practical class to be seen! Well, except for the Flight class with Mr. al-Rashid. Looking forward to that one.

Dr. McCoy, PLEASE tell me that you've got something interesting for my independent science work.

To be honest, it didn't occur to me to think you would; I don't think it's in your nature.

You know, certain aspects of it might appeal to you more than others. My master's degree is in modern history and international affairs - that sort of thing might interest you more than the standard Western Civ curriculum. Although that is certainly valuable, too. Think of it as pattern-recognition.

I'm eventually going to have to take business courses, and Miss Monroe explained to me that the history classes are a prerequisite for most of them. So I look at it as an investment.

Something you might want to consider, too; the idea that history repeats itself is a load of crap, of course, but you do get repeating patterns. Some things don't change. Human nature is one of them. Understanding the less tangible forces and how they work upon society is probably the most purely useful analytic tool you get out of the study of history.

Nathan?

I wonder if there is something to pattern-recognition in precognition?

Why does ~pattern recognition~ strike me as very important?

You and I need to sit down and talk now that we're both back, m'dear. I'm beginning to think it's all about patterns.

Yes. Yes, we do.

But that phrase is sticking in my mind. It is -vexing- me.

I'm not surprised. Remember, you were learning the Askani meditative forms, and part of what they did, apparently to prepare me for when my precog recovered from burnout, was drive those patterns into my head to provide me with a way of expressing what I sense. They might have been trying to do the same with you more subtly - I think, clearly, the differences in our abilities made it much less effective with you.

But yes. Talking is good. You want to come over this evening? I promised Moira I'd make her something chocolate and appallingly bad for her. It might as well be shared, no?

Chocolate is best when shared. So definitly yes.

There is ... this is going to bother me for a very long time. The phrase is ringing in my head like a bell.

Ding-dong!

Mutant linguist and all-around pattern recognizer calling... ;-)

Patterns... Is -that- how you figured out all those notes and what would happen?

Sort of. It's also how I did the 256-bit hack back when.

You, I, and Nathan and at least one of my notebooks need to have a conversation.

Manual or algorythmic hack?

Note: the title's only accurate if you include 'unless the hacker has mutant powers'.

Interesting. Nice side-application of your ability there. Can you create an entirely new language?

The thought had occurred to me, but I haven't really done much with the idea so far. I'm trying to figure out an independent study project for my dual-enrollment at the local university, though. Hm. The idea of mutant-power-optimized hardware coupled with mutant-power-optimized software is rather appealing, though I do have a couple other ideas I may explore.

The trick, as I see it, is to develop both integrated and independent hardware/software systems, depending on project and application. I tend to concentrate on the specific hard-coded hardware; function-specific as it were.

That being said, there's a certain joy in creating something out of nothing, rather than just monkeying with someone else's data.

See, I had managed to forget... My hacker soul burns with jealousy. Luckily, the rest of my soul is aware that you can't walk through walls.
