The trick, as I see it, is to develop both integrated and independent hardware/software systems, depending on project and application. I tend to concentrate on the specific hard-coded hardware; function-specific as it were.

That being said, there's a certain joy in creating something out of nothing, rather than just monkeying with someone else's data.
